The Shaw Neighborhood has hosted the very popular Historic Shaw Art Fair each fall since 1993. Located on the tree-lined parkway of Flora Place at Tower Grove Avenue, the Shaw Art Fair is one of the premier fine art and fine craft fairs in the St. Louis area. This year’s Fair is October 5 and 6. It is highly rated by art fair magazines and participating artists for its quality, setting, and attendees. Around 135 artists and craftspeople from around the country are selected each year to participate in the professionally juried event. Here’s your guide on the best way to take in the Fair:
The Art
Artists show in tents on the Flora Place parkway, across from the early 20th-century stately homes that line the street. The fair runs on both sides of the parkway from Thurman to Tower Grove avenues. You will find paintings, photography, fiber arts, glass, jewelry, woodworking, and mixed media. Booths are easily accessible, and artists are on hand to answer questions. Sales are often robust so be prepared to make acquisition decisions on-site. Check out a current list of this year’s participating artists.
The Music
In the center of the Fair, at Klemm Avenue, there is a music stage and seating area. This is a great spot to take a break and enjoy some of St. Louis’ best performers, from Jazz St. Louis’ Jazz All-Stars to the Funky Butt Brass Band. Check out the complete schedule of all the music.
Food and Beverages
It’s an art fair, not a food festival. That being said, there are several choices for festival food, along with a selection of beers, wines, and some mixed drinks available for purchase. Vendors are located in the center of the fair near the seating area.
Other Tips
This popular event is geared for people of all ages; it includes a kid’s art area and a live puppet show for the young ones three times each day. The Missouri Botanical Garden’s annual Best of Missouri Market is the same weekend, and many Fair visitors attend both events. Entry gates for the festival are located at either end: at Tower Grove Avenue at Flora Place (across from the MBG) and at Thurman Avenue and Flora Place. Street parking is available throughout the neighborhood and in and around Tower Grove Park. Tickets are $8 online and $10 at the door and are good for both days.
Proceeds from the event support programs for the Shaw Neighborhood Improvement Association.
