Endangered Wolf Center
For an inspiring and educational experience, visit the Endangered Wolf Center where you can see a multitude of wolf species, including the most endangered wolf in the world: the red wolf. Red wolves once roamed from Missouri to Texas and east to Florida, but were eventually hunted to the brink of extinction. In 1980, they were declared extinct in the wild, but a captive breeding program ensured the survival of the species. Today, just over 30 red wolves exist in the wild. The Center has been involved with the recovery program from the beginning and has red wolves in their own captive program. They received their first pair of red wolves in 1981, and was the first facility to breed endangered red wolves in captivity. Many people don’t know that the red wolf exists, let alone it can trace its ties back to the United States and Missouri. “This is the only large carnivore species that is solely native to the United States. It is truly made in the USA. This species is a national treasure,” said Regina Mossitti, Director of Animal Care and Conservation. The Endangered Wolf Center has reintroduced wolves into the wild to help the recovery of the critically endangered red wolf species, helping to save them from extinction.
For those interested in activities at the center, they have many available summer camp sessions. A Pup Camp for ages 4-5, a Wolf Camp for ages 6-12 and a Teen Camp for ages 13-15. For others looking to get involved, they offer many volunteer and educational programs!

Not to mention, the scenic views that change with every season make it a gorgeous destination for a day date or family adventure anytime of the year.
Wild Bird Sanctuary
Located right across the street from Lone Elk Park, the Wild Bird Sanctuary is one of the largest of its kind in the world. There are over 200 reptiles and bird species from around the globe on display. It is a one of a kind wildlife experience with an excellent mission to preserve the earth’s biological diversity and the future of threatened bird species. The sanctuary features free seasonal shows, nature trails, picnic pavilions and educational programs for visitors. Throughout every season, you will see Bald Eagles, Great-Horned Owls, White Pelicans, and Thick-billed Parrots among others. During the summer months, you’ll see Laughing Kookaburra, Turkey Vultures and Brown Pelicans. Visitors can also get a behind-the-scenes tour of the breeding facilities, where there’s no better place to observe numerous species of local songbirds.
