To be a successful interior designer, one must draw upon a knowledge of aesthetics, function and taste. They must constantly research, create and demonstrate their ideas to create a desired look and feel through the use of lights, furniture, flooring, colors and fabrics. One of the most essential qualities of a designer is one that has the ability to plan a space according to a client’s needs. While people hire interior designers for their professional skills, they still want their home to reflect their personality and tastes, both visually and functionally.
For an estate in Ladue, Linda Williams and Ruth Nowlin, designers at Dau Furniture, really brought a lower level room to life through the use of color and texture. “We turned a lower-level blank space into one that’s interesting as well as functional for a variety of activities,” says Williams. The goal was to create a retro '60s and '70s feel without being literal. To do this, they used updated colors, a burnt orange for the accent wall, rug and curtains, with bursts of greens and purples sprinkled in the pillows.
Another key to creating this space was balance. While the long, narrow room was a challenge, breaking up the room into smaller, more functional spaces was key. To do this, the designers used neutral colored, large pieces of furniture. The long white couch and white coffee table balanced the orange of the wall and rug perfectly. For the designers, this section was their favorite part, “The bold color just infuses life into a remote, lower-level living space,” Nowlin says. To hide a set of unappealing doors, the designers used an orange drapery treatment, balanced perfectly with a neutral colored, oversized chair and ottoman. For final, unique touches, Midcentury details can be spotted in the side tables, brass accents and light fixtures.
The result was a beautifully balanced, functional and comfortable living area perfect for modern living crafted by Nowlin and Williams.
