Admit it: You hate winter. When you think of the biting breeze and slushy snow that January brings, you feel a wave of dread. You’d rather be snuggled under your covers than battling the elements.
Wriggle out from under those blankets and venture outside. You’d be surprised at how many outdoor activities can remedy your boredom and take your mind off the chill.

What: Skiing. Where: Hidden Valley, 17409 Hidden Valley, Wildwood, 636-938-5373, www.hiddenvalleyski.com. Why you should check it out: Hidden Valley is one of the only places in the area where you have a chance to ski or snowboard. Lessons are offered to beginners—and to those wishing to improve. Late-night skiing, which lasts until 3 a.m., is offered every Friday and Saturday.
What: Ice skating. Where: iceZONE, 5555 St. Louis Mills, 314-227-5288, www.stlouismills.com. Why you should check it out: Even if you’re not interested in the open skating or private lessons, you can still watch the St. Louis Blues practice.

What: Garden tours. Where: Missouri Botanical Garden, 4344 Shaw, 314-577-9400, www.mobot.org. Why you should check it out: Snow only highlights the beauty of the various plant shapes in the Japanese Garden—and this is your chance to experience a rare winter sight: live plants and flowers.
What: Golf. Where: Norman K. Probstein Golf Course, 6141 Lagoon, Forest Park, 314-367-1337. Why you should check it out: The annual Frozen Open golf tournament will tee off on New Year’s Day no matter the weather conditions. And don’t worry about staying warm—Bailey’s and coffee, Bloody Marys and chili will be available.
What: Animal watching. Where: Saint Louis Zoo, 1 Government Dr., 314-781-0900, www.stlzoo.org. Why you should check it out: If you like your brisk strolls complete with views of snow-covered animals, join the Wild Side Walkers at the zoo on Tuesdays and Saturdays. You’ll be able to enjoy the zoo without the summertime crowds—or smells.
