Admit it: There’s something about going to a bar alone that scares you. Either you assume that only creeps go to bars alone (and you’d rather not be taken for one), or you’re simply afraid of being alone with yourself. “Well, what do I do when I get there?” Drink. “Who will I talk to?” Anyone you want. “How many drinks should I order?” As many as you want. “Won’t people look at me weird?” Yes. But, if anything, you’ll intimidate them.
It’s OK to run around by yourself. It’s perfectly acceptable to read an US Weekly or the newest Harry Potter. You’re not at all strange if you chat with the bartender, do the crossword or play an entire Stevie Nicks album on the jukebox. And most of all, don’t be afraid to simply sit there, stirring your whiskey with a straw while watching the horse race from a mounted television. Being alone isn’t so bad. Really.
