We asked the Loop’s star clipper and style savant for his take on the latest trends—which ones are silly, which make sense, and which might last longer than a nanosecond.
Women’s hair: “Volume’s in. We went through a flat-ironed period where the look was very straight, very sleek, very shiny. It’s leaning back toward curl. It’s not totally ’80s—it’s not hard and sprayed to death, and it’s not a poodle perm. It’s a romantic look, very Art Nouveau, with more softness around the face.”
The ponytail: “It never goes away, but they are marketing the hell out of it like it’s a new discovery. Part of that is the increase in extensions—they’ve changed the concept of how hair is supposed to look. People turn to celebrities for their clue, and many of these people have removable tracks, or wefts, glued, sewn or bonded to give the illusion of fuller, thicker, longer hair.”
Color: “Hair coloring is going in a more natural direction. It’s still there—no way they’re going to let anybody out with their natural color—but it hints that the person could have grown this hair out of her own head. The exception? Blonde hair that’s gone all platinum. We have subtle, subtle, subtle and then that.”
Men’s hair: “It’s getting longer; a Beatles cut with bangs in the eyes, longer in the back, disheveled but without any facial hair—it’s clean-cut but also a bit of a rocker look.”
Makeup: “They’re threatening us with blue eye shadow again—that blue that people smear on with a paintbrush. It’s like working with plutonium: You can barely use any; blow it on.”
Identity handbags: “And still with the identity handbags—you can buy two Yugos for the price of one Balenciaga.”
Wedges: “Stilettos are supposed to be out, but you’ll never make a wedge heel look as sexy. It doesn’t elongate the body. People are jumping under the knife to look better—what’s a couple hours in high heels?”
