Now That’s What We Call a Couple
“I had a couple put their names to work on their menu. The bride’s last name meant ‘spinach.’ The groom was French, and his last name meant ‘raspberry.’ They had a special salad on their menu that was called by their last names, made out of spinach leaves with a raspberry vinaigrette.”

“We had coasters made with personal questions from the couple’s relationship. The answer was printed very small on the reverse side. They were really cute and gave all the guests something to look at.”

“Falling” in Love
“We recently had a wedding where every aspect was designed to support the fall theme. A spectacular clear tent was decorated with soft lighting and fall print overlays made by the bride, while centerpieces included five antique milk bottles decorated by the bride with antique buttons and filled with colorful mums and candles. And instead of a traditional wedding cake, the couple did a ‘pie-cutting ceremony’ and offered guests a dessert bar of fall pies and cakes. Guests feasted on a fall menu that included chicken and tenderloin along with sweet potatoes and succotash.”

“I can recall a wedding where the bride wanted to capture and embrace the fall theme. Instead of the normal rose or other flower petals for finishing touches on tables and in the flower girl’s basket, we used colorful leaves and added glitter to bags of leaves to give them a shiny and decorative flair. Also, we embellished a three-tier cake ‘card box,’ where guests could deposit their cards for the couple, with the decorative leaves. They appeared to cascade down the box for a falling-leaves effect.”

Corny but Cute
“I had a couple who had a totally normal wedding other than their grand entrance, which was done to a smoke machine and the song ‘Thriller.’ They wanted to pay homage to Halloween, their favorite holiday.”

“I had a client who said her fiancé was ‘the sparkle in her life.’ At the end of the wedding, they did a sparkler exit.”

For the Avid Sports Fan
“I did a wedding where the couple were NASCAR fans. So we didn’t go overboard with NASCAR décor; we simply numbered/named all the tables after race car drivers. The head table had No. 88 [Dale Earnhardt Jr.], the family table was No. 25 and so on.”

“I had a couple who were gymnastic coaches. They really wanted to include their students in the wedding, so they had the gymnasts—all 11 of them—do gymnastics down the aisle.”

White’s Not the Only Color
“Green weddings are making their way slowly into the Midwest wedding scene. Some of the popular green trends are using recycled invitations, seed-paper party favors [paper with seeds embedded], potted plants or seedlings as party favors and eco-honeymoons.”
Sacha Patires, Whimsical Weddings
“We had a bride hand out energy-saver light bulbs as a party favor; her invitations were on recycled paper, and guests were asked to RSVP via email or phone. River rocks were used as place cards. We even recycled the wine and beer bottles at the end of the night. It was not a 100 percent green wedding, so we called it semi-green.”

… and Neither Is Green
“My favorite trend right now is the bride wearing red shoes. Just a touch of color—not many people even notice, but it’s fun!”
Julz Lutz, A Friend of the Bride
“Black is back! A few years ago brown was the new black, and this year I am seeing black make its way back into the wedding scene. Black tuxes, black bridesmaid dresses, black linens, et cetera.”
