35 and Then Some
Thank you for “The 35 Best Restaurants in St. Louis—and One Restaurant of the Year” (October 2008). I am always looking for new and exciting places to dine, and most of the time, I am calling to ask friends what they think about the new restaurants on the scene. I am excited to see some newer restaurants on the list, and I am looking forward to experiencing them myself. In addition, I was happy to see some of our longer-existing restaurants still on the list—Sidney Street Café has always been one of my favorites.
In addition, I have to agree with your 2008 Restaurant of the Year, Robust. For the first time in a very long time, I was excited after my first experience at a new restaurant. I thought to myself, “Finally someone in St. Louis has gotten it right.” I love the atmosphere, and the food is fabulous. I have been back on several occasions, and I have been recommending Robust to all my friends.

You’ve got to be kidding. My wife and I ate at Robust tonight, directly as a result of it being named Restaurant of the Year. Some of the food we were served was very poor—tepid flank steak, salmon panzanella that seemed to be fresh, but had no identifiable sauce. How boring and disappointing. Robust was the poorest of the many newer St. Louis restaurants we’ve dined at recently. Many excellent and much better St. Louis restaurants have a right to be insulted and indignant by St. Louis Magazine’s crowning of Robust.

While I agree with a few of your choices for “Best” restaurants, there is one you clearly overlooked: Paul Manno’s is clearly the best restaurant in St. Louis. The food is not to be topped, and the service is impeccable. As far as Italian restaurants go in the St. Louis area, there is no better choice. I hope you’ll expand your list to include restaurants in west St. Louis and see that you don’t have to travel to the hippest or most expensive restaurant to have a good meal, you just have to go to Paul Manno’s.

Take My Wife …
Surely there must be a mistake. I just read the September issue of your fine magazine, and although there are 11 pages dedicated to St. Louis’ best-dressed, I didn’t find my wife, Christy, among the style-setters. I’d certainly like to know how these other wonderful folks got selected. I’m not denying their worthiness, but my wife makes them all look like amateurs. Just to make a point … Are their AmEx bills delivered by UPS? I bet not.

Julius Leading
I enjoyed “A Conversation With Julius Hunter” in the September 2008 issue. It was a great article depicting Julius as one of our community leaders.

Family Meal
I was surprised to see Dewey’s Pizza make your A-List for “Dinner With the Kids” (July 2008). Yes, my kid loves their pizza, too, but the restaurant doesn’t offer changing stations in their restaurants, which is anything but family-friendly!
