With the help of community partnerships, ArchCity Defenders provides free and low-cost legal representation to those who don’t typically qualify for help. Often, clients are those looking for criminal defense after an arrest or those facing eviction. archcitydefenders.org.
Catholic Legal Assistance Ministry
This branch of Catholic Charities Community Services offers assistance to impoverished families, victims of domestic abuse, and immigrant populations. Last summer, Saint Louis University School of Law announced its new downtown building would shelter the nonprofit. ccstl.org.
Gateway Legal Services
This organization helps those denied Social Security disability, Supplemental Security Income benefits, or veterans’ disability benefits. If a client loses a case, the service provided is free; if the client wins the case, Gateway generally collects 20 percent to 22 percent of the awarded funds. gatewaylegal.org.
Jane Doe Advocacy Center
Founded by attorney Rachna Goel, this Maplewood-based nonprofit provides legal service for issues involving sexual violence and public health. Services are provided at flat rates or on a sliding scale of fees, depending on income and household size, and payment plans are available when necessary. janedoeadvocacy.wordpress.com.
Legal Advocates for Abused Women
A program of the Crime Victim Advocacy Center, Legal Advocates For Abused Women provides legal assistance to women and men who are victims of intimate partner violence. The organization works closely with police, allowing it to intervene immediately and help clients. laawstl.org.
Legal Services of Eastern Missouri
Founded in 1956, this organization offers free legal aid to low-income and elderly individuals. As with some other legal-related nonprofits, many area firms and attorneys donate to the cause. Each year, for instance, The Simon Law Firm hosts a trial-practice seminar to benefit the nonprofit. lsem.org.
The Migrant & Immigrant Community Action Project
Led by Nicole Cortés and Jessica Mayo, this project strives to help low-income immigrants with legal difficulties. It also works with victims of domestic violence. Services are provided on a sliding scale. mica-project.org.
Volunteer Lawyers and Accountants for the Arts
This nonprofit provides free legal (and accounting) assistance to artists and arts organizations. In addition to helping with art-related legal problems, it offers a variety of affordable educational programs. Washington University graduate Sue Greenberg, who is the company manager at The Muny, serves as executive director. vlaa.org.
