Where do you find the clothes you really love? I love H&M, just because it’s affordable and kind of funky, but I also have a lot of fun at Rag-O-Rama, thrift stores, little vintage shops where you can find not necessarily a whole outfit but just pieces—a cool hat or a cool jacket.
How do you put an outfit together? I don’t usually have anything in mind, per se. I like to work with what I think looks good on me. That’s one thing about my style: I don’t like my clothes to make me—I’m just myself, and these clothes are accenting that.
Have you always been interested in style? Oh yeah. It’s definitely a family thing. I consider my mother pretty conservative, yet stylish. Shop, shop, shop—always. My father is a clotheshorse, not name-brand stuff, but he’s always loved to look nice, smell nice, loved nice jewelry—a real appreciation for looking nice—and I have an older brother who’s the same. I would always wear my brother’s clothes. I was voted one of the best-dressed in eighth grade, then best-dressed in high school.
Do you get fan mail? I get e-mails every day, sometimes calls. It’s almost always about the tie. I love really funky, unique ties. People will come up to me on the street and be like, “I loved that blue striped tie you wore the other day!”
What was your first favorite outfit? I distinctly remember an outfit I had in seventh grade: pink shirt, pink-and-black bow tie and a black vest. Who wore a bow tie back then?! I’d wear it to school dances.
What kind of events are the most fun to dress up for? Stuffy events are no fun. I like the parties with the beautiful people—I get in where I fit in.
