Take a leisurely stroll through the temporal lobe, admire the twisting intricacy of the cerebral cortex, and reach out and touch the hippocampus at Brain School, an educational event presented by Saint Louis University Hospital and the MidAmerica Stroke Network.
Brain School will take place from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. on Saturday, September 25 at City Museum. This is the first Brain School event hosted by the MidAmerica Stroke Network, a regional network founded by SLU Hospital. “We saw a need in the community [for this event] and wanted to present real strategies to maintain a healthy brain,” says Staci Harvatin, marketing and PR coordinator for SLU Hospital.
The inflatable Mega Brain will make its St. Louis debut on Saturday at the event. Visitors will be able to walk through the interactive replica on tours led by neurospecialists. “We were looking to do something engaging, something you can touch with your hands, which is hard to do with something very technical,” says Laura Keller, marketing and media relations director at SLU Hospital.
Plaques will also be posted at key areas to highlight the mysterious structures of the brain and explain various brain diseases. Leaders in stroke care will give presentations throughout the event for caregivers, survivors and interested attendees. Free blood pressure, cholesterol and stroke risk screenings will also be available onsite.
The event will take place at City Museum in the hall that formerly served as the performance area for the circus. “We wanted to keep the event in the city, and City Museum is an imaginative place that really fits with what the brain can do,” says Harvatin.
General admission to the City Museum for Brain School is free for the first 500 people to register online. Free parking for the event is also available. For registration and more information, visit sluhospital.com.
