Like Father, Like Son: “Being Buck”
Joe Buck was pretty reserved at first, says photographer Dilip Vishwanat, “but when we were at the stadium and it was just the guys, he started telling some stories of him and his dad, stuff he’d never told anybody before. You get arguably the best tutor in U.S. sports commentary as your father—it’s Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker stuff.” Vishwanat’s shot his share of sports celebs, covering Super Bowls, Stanley Cups, and World Series and shooting for Getty Images, ESPN The Magazine, Sports Illustrated, and The New York Times. He remembers Jack Buck’s ease in the press box, his kindness and patience with the “civilians” who wanted to shake his hand. Joe’s the same, Vishwanat says; even with the fuss of a photo shoot, he stayed humble and “just rolled with the punches.”
True Style: “Ace of Spade”
Deborah Lloyd, creative director for Kate Spade, told style editor Nicole Benoist Edgerton that her favorite way to get around New York is on the subway—in cocktail attire. Great clothes should be worn every day, everywhere...
Report Card: “A-List/09”
You can’t spend hours hunting for the most fun and the finest quality in St. Louis without being changed. Evaluating kickball leagues, Jarrett Medlin found himself joining one. After researching Artmart’s framing, Margaret Bauer took out her acrylic paints, determined to create something worth hanging. Stefene Russell found Gen Y artists whose open-source culture overwhelmed her with relief: “I guess I was born 10 years too early; I’ve always thought it should be that way!” And Stephen Schenkenberg swears he’ll never buy flowers the same way again (“I’ve been convinced it’s an art. I shouldn’t just swoop in and grab something”).
Pie Chart
Last fall, Sugaree Baking Company owner Pat Rutherford was apprehensive about her decision to sell pies on weekends to boost sales. The response was immediate: empty shelves every weekend except for the one following January 1. Her New Year’s resolution? Start next year by taking that weekend off.
