The “official” start of the holiday season is, each and every year, a point of contention. Some merrily swap out the jack-o'-lantern for the Christmas tree, while humbugs plug their ears during holiday commercials until Thanksgiving has passed. Me, I leave it to Forest Park to decide. As soon as the Science Center dons her holiday bow and Steinberg Skating Rink opens, it’s a go.
The rink officially opens today. While my annual visit to Steinberg reminds me (rather brusquely) that I am, in fact, a year older, I can’t deny the solid cheap thrills it provides. And now that I’m old enough to enjoy the beer and wine on offer, it’s become one of my favorite wintertime ways to while away a Friday night. The fact that after 9 p.m., I can tipsily creak my way around the rink with very few knee-high hooligans running into me equals a jolly good time indeed. Add music and a fire pit, and it gets downright romantic. The rink stays open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
Now, one can do only so much drinking at the rink. So better to finish off your night at British-infused whiskey-wonderland, Fox & Hounds Tavern at The Cheshire—the quintessential place to warm your tootsies with a toddy. (Come December 15, be sure to check out the other feather in Cheshire’s night cap: Basso, a sexy basement bar with 32 beers on tap and a slew of seductive wines.)
