| | Just after a proposed restaurant deal had collapsed, while airing it out on a bike ride in Meramec State Park, Ryan Maher stopped for a moment to simply admire the wonders of nature. He looked down and at his feet were vibrant, apricot-scented, orange mushrooms. Lots of them. And a light bulb went off, right there in the middle of the woods. Hearing the story, I recalled the scene from The Graduate where Mr. Robinson prophesied the future. For Maher, though, the future was not in “plastics” but in something more sensual, more organic, more fun—“chanterelles.” His business, Missouri Wild Edibles, took root in May 2010.
