| Description: | Annbriar Golf Course, in Waterloo, Ill., started as a dream: Ann Nobbe wanted to turn her farm into a golf course. She died before she had the chance, but her family knew what to do, and the result is more beautiful than most courses, flawlessly kept, with a mix of angles and approaches. There are mischievous traps, sadistic obstacles and moments of straight-down-the-fairway simplicity; the course is choreographed for all the emotional peaks and valleys that make golf addictive. Its 227 acres include swales and slopes, a waterfall and a creek. That’s not to say that you wait while your predecessors gawk at the scenery, though: “They move you along,” one local champion says with satisfaction. |
