Cheap Eats

Budget-friendly plates, places, people

SLM’s dining team gets asked a lot of restaurant-related questions, but the most frequent query is, “Can you recommend somewhere that’s good—and cheap?” Indeed, we can (after much thought and research). In the following pages, you’ll discover 50 options, something for any mood, culinary hankering, relative liquidity, or weather. Perhaps you’ll find a new favorite, one that you can recommend if you’re ever asked the same thorny question.

I wouldn't say Al Carfagno has an easy-going demeanor. Curious to know if you all made it to the kitchen to see where this pizza was made. Disgusting. You couldn't pay me to eat at this place.

You've missed a true gem at the end of the loop. The hotdogs at Classic Hotdogs are Amazing. Cooked fresh, served on a poppy seed fresh roll. And they have burgers, gyros, wings and more. If you're really lucky, the owner will be working on his evening menu and you can get a wonderful meal of lamb shank with saffron and seasoned rice. Yes, 2 kinds of rice and a fall off the bone lamb shank. Located on the "wrong" end of the loop down by the bus barns and Old Wabash RR station.
