1. Use your friends. When it comes to sparkly holiday gear, instead of making a major purchase for a one-time party appearance, why not borrow from a friend? That sequined clutch she used for last year’s stint as a bridesmaid might be just what you need to amp up your simple black dress. In return, offer to share some of your favorite party looks with her.
2. Invest in layers. Jenita Hladyshewsky, co-owner of Bada Bling Boutique (311 S Lincoln, O’Fallon, Ill., 618-589-3880) says, “Don't shove those cute warm-weather pieces to the back of the closet. Instead, incorporate long sleeves, leggings, and winter accessories to make a whole new look!” Hladyshewsky styled the image above using a mix of both spring and fall options, all still available in store.
3. Think thrift. There are a number of amazing vintage stores in the area, and right now luxe jewelry and handbags from the '20s and '30s are especially on-trend. For those new to pre-owned finds, accessories are usually the safest way to add a few new vintage pieces into your wardrobe.
4. Choose wisely. Do your research before shopping. If having a stylish wardrobe is truly essential to your career, take the time to peruse a few websites like Elle or Vogue prior to making a purchase. Quite often you’ll find up-to-the-minute trend reports that break down the most important new looks for each season. You may even decide that instead of a new outfit, all you really need is a new scarf or pair of leather leggings.
5. The classics count. Hopefully you’ve built your wardrobe around the classics—if not, now is the time to start. Camel coats, diamond (or faux) studs, and great denim never go out of style. A white button-down top can be worn at least a dozen ways. Want proof? Click here.
