According to some, meditation can reduce stress, boost your mood, and even help you lose weight.
Meditation’s power lies in clearing the mind, typically through focus on a single item, breathing, or a mantra. It can be hard to turn the mind off and many beginniners give up on meditation because focusing on not thinking is, admittedly tricky.
But there are groups in St. Louis to help beginners get started and realize the benefits of meditation. Best of all, most of them won't charge you a dime to find inner peace.
This organization holds weekly teacher-led sitting groups at the Big Bend Yoga Center (88 N. Gore) on Sundays (7 to 8:30 p.m.) and Thursdays ( 4 to 5 p.m.). Starting March 3, they will also have a women’s group that meets on Sundays (3 to 4:15 p.m.) at the Pilates + Yoga Studio (1015 McClausland). The groups are free, but you can get more instruction at one of their mindfulness workshops, which start at $15.
Shambhala-St. Louis hosts donation based meditation groups at this St. Louis Wellness Center (425 Marshall Ave) every Wednesday (7 to 8:30 pm..) and Sunday (11:30 to 1 p.m. with an extra session from 10 to 11:20 a.m. on the first and third Sunday of the month). The groups are open to anyone and there is special training for beginners on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. There are also day-long meditation sessions on the first Saturday of every month from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m for $10.
Meditation newbies should check out the beginners night on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month starting at 6:30 p.m at the Missouri Zen Center (220 Spring Ave). The free class provides an introduction to Buddhism and Zen meditation and also includes a 20-minute meditation session. Registration is required.
This group offers free weekly classes at different branches of the St. Louis county Library.
At the Atah Sanctuary Holistic Center (500 Jungermann Rd.) a meditation session costs $5 but it also includes the (supposedly) healing sounds of crystalline bowls and chimes. The hour long class includes 15 minutes without music to achieve a meditative state, 30 minutes of sound therapy, and then 15 minutes to journal about the experience. First and third Sunday of the month 5-6 p.m.
