Mendicants peddled tickets on the streets, a burst of floratory about the Rams came from a few pot puffers whose only worry was bad prison food (and even that's getting better), an excessively wealthy executive "taken by scotch"—as he put it—with a terrible and laudable dignity and a massive show of force by police officers. The increased presence by the gendarmes was visible on The National Day of Remembrance Sunday at the Edward Jones Dome, where the Rams were clobbered by the Philadelphia Eagles 31-13 at the season opener. Near the Broadway entrance to the Dome, Karen and Gordy Klingenberg (at left) of Hoyleton, Ill., held a poster reminding ticket holders to remember 9/11. Nearby, wonder-of-wonders, The Post-Dispatch sponsored a booth at which game attendees could sign up for eight-week subscriptions to the paper and get Rams souvenirs. "The sale of papers will help me earn my scholarship," pointed out the attendant.
Beaming while tossing a pigskin, quarterback Sam Bradford acknowledged the gaggle of media types on the pre-game field. Among those who cheered him on were Rams staffer Andre Craig with Maria Spagnuolo (at right), wife of Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo, who said she had prepared meatballs for dinner later that night. She also offered that she is a hair stylist both here and in Philadelphia.
Upstairs in the Sub Zero Vodka Bar Club, formerly the late Georgia Frontiere's suite, Tommy Anderson with pal Gary Gardner demonstrated on his iPhone how he created apps with which one could scan lottery tickets with a self-contained camera from the smart phone. He owns Anderson Enterprises. Kelly Hummert was sidled up to party planner Amit Dhawan, who revealed his next 'do will be a Stan Musial gala on Oct. 1 at the Chase Hotel to benefit "Musial's favorite charity, Covenant House." In his family suite, Rex Sinquefield with his wife, Jeanne, discussed his crusade to let voters decide whether to replace Missouri individual and corporate income taxes with higher sales taxes. "In a few weeks, we'll begin running a significant advertising campaign in southwest Missouri," he said.
Elsewhere, attorney Darold Crotzer boasted that his son and SLU High/Mizzou alum, Darold "Doc" Crotzer, will marry Lauren Crotty next year. "Her parents' name is just above ours in the telephone directory," chirped Darold's glamorous wife, Jeri. "Doc is now first assistant editor on the FOX series, 'Glee,'" said the proud pop. With the Crotzers were Carol and Mike O'Meara, St. Louis County Council member and international rep of the United Association of Plumbers, Pipefitters, and Sprinklerfitters union. Turning to terrorist threats, Tom Voss (at left), chairman of the board, president, and CEO of Ameren Corp., said he had just returned from a security meeting of companies in New York City. He described the scene in Manahattan: "It seemed that the police stopped and inspected every car and truck going into the city." He added that the Ameren nuclear plant here is well protected. With Voss at the game was his wife, Carol (at left).
Bigger-than-life and former cager, Cedric Cobb, who's now assistant to Roland Williams, recalled his years at Pittsburgh State University: "In those days, I had to break up fights among Muslims and others," he said. Williams is the former Rams tight end, who went on to win Super Bowl XXXIV in the victory over the Tennessee Titans and has since turned to broadcasting.
