Newsweek gave public education in the St. Louis area a nod recently, ranking Clayton High School and Metro Academic and Classical High School among the top 20 public high schools in the Midwest and 11 others in the top 1,000 in the country.
The magazine factored in six criteria: the four-year graduation rate, college-acceptance rate, and number of AP and other high-level exams given per student made up 75 percent of the rankings, while average SAT/ACT scores and AP/college-level test scores counted for another 10 percent each, and the number of AP courses offered per student counted for the remaining 5 percent.
Metro Academic and Classical High School came in at No. 12 in the Midwest (No. 125 in the country), with a calculated 100 percent graduation rate, 100 percent college-bound graduates, 0.7 AP/IB tests per student, average graduate ACT score of 26.9, and average student AP score of 2.6.
Clayton High School followed closely at No. 13 in the Midwest (No. 129 in the country), with also a calculated 100 percent graduation rate, 95 percent college-bound graduates, 0.6 AP/IB tests per student, average graduate ACT score of 25.8, and average student AP score of 4.1.
Several other area high schools made the list of top 1,000 public high schools in the country, including Ladue Horton Watkins High School (No. 188), Rockwood Summit High School (No. 497), Lafayette High School (No. 508), Marquette High School (No. 585), Lindbergh High School (No. 663), Eureka High School (No. 676), Parkway West High School (No. 801), Parkway Central High School (No. 871), Kirkwood High School (No. 906), Parkway South High School (No. 934), and Parkway North High School (No. 947).
