From princesses to St. Patty's day, Kelly Clarkson to cry babies, there's plenty to see, hear, and do this month in St. Louis. Here's our list of the top 10 things not to miss from the SLM calendar (in chronological order):
This musical is based on the John Waters film starring Johnny Depp. The Wall Street Journal called the Broadway production “the funniest new musical since Avenue Q.” New Line Theatre’s adaptation makes it a smaller, more intimate show. $10–$20. Time: 8 p.m. New Line Theatre, Washington University South Campus Theatre, 6501 Clayton, 314-534-1111, newlinetheatre.com.
First came The Who’s rock opera Tommy, winning awards both as an album and in the theater. Jesus Christ Superstar and Pink Floyd’s The Wall saw similar success. Now, punk-rock trio Green Day’s American Idiot, a Grammy Award–winning rock opera examining life in the post–9/11 world, brings Tony–nominated panache to the stage. $22–$92. Times: 2 p.m. Fri, 2 and 8 p.m. Sat, 2 and 7:30 p.m. Sun. Peabody Opera House, 1400 Market, 800-745-3000, peabodyoperahouse.com.
The last time Radiohead visited St. Louis, in 2008, the British band had just released In Rainbows, its second U.K. No. 1 album since Kid A (and fifth overall). The latest from Thom Yorke and company is The King of Limbs, released last February. “Now that we’ve figured out how to play it live, that creates an energy that we want to pursue,” Yorke told Rolling Stone. “You want to get it out there.” $46.50–$66.50. Time: 7:30 p.m. Scottrade Center, 1401 Clark, 314-622-5435, scottradecenter.com.
Long before The X Factor came to the States, before all of the second-guessing about American Idol’s subsequent winners, there was Kelly Clarkson. Over the past decade, the Texas native has proven her staying power with two Grammy Awards, seven Billboard top 10 singles, and more than 20 million albums sold. $32.50–$59.50. Times: 8 p.m. Fox Theatre, 527 N. Grand, 314-534-1111, fabulousfox.com.
Five decades ago, Miles Davis recruited Herbie Hancock to join his quintet. Today, Hancock has established himself as one of the all-time jazz greats, winning 14 Grammy Awards and even teaming up with Kanye West for a track on 808s & Heartbreak. $40–$150. Time: 7:30 p.m. Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center, University of Missouri–St. Louis, 1 University, 314-516-4949, touhill.org.
On the group’s 16th studio album, 2120 South Michigan Avenue, George Thorogood and the Destroyers pay tribute to Chicago’s Chess Records, at the intersection of blues and rock ’n’ roll. Thorogood’s hits—including “Bad to the Bone,” as well as covers of “Who Do You Love?” and “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer”—are sure to be crowd favorites. $30. Time: 8 p.m. The Pageant, 6161 Delmar, 314-726-6161, thepageant.com.
Princesses-in-training will love this ice show, which brings together princesses from classic and recent Disney movies, including Tangled, Cinderella, and The Princess and the Frog. $13–$70. Times: 7 p.m. Thu–Sat, 10:30 a.m. Fri, 11 a.m. & 3 p.m. Sat, 1 & 5 p.m. Sun. Scottrade Center, 1401 Clark, 314-622-5435, scottradecenter.com. For tickets, call 800-745-3000 or visit ticketmaster.com.
Nobuo Uematsu may be one of the most-listened-to contemporary composers, due to his work on the Final Fantasy video-game series. Audience members will see images from the games while Uematsu performs on keyboard, backed by the St. Louis Symphony and Symphony Chorus. The composer’s deep love of classic video-game melodies previously led him and Square Enix colleagues to form a band, The Black Mages, devoted to performing video-game music in a prog-rock style. Each night with the symphony features different songs from the Final Fantasy games. $35–$65; $150 VIP ticket includes meet-and-greet with Uematsu. Time: 7:30 p.m. Powell Symphony Hall, 718 N. Grand, 314-534-1700, stlsymphony.org.
The Greater St. Louis Art Association sponsors this annual arts-and-crafts show featuring work from local painters, sculptors, ceramists, glass and metal artists, and many others. Times: 6–9 p.m. Fri, 10 a.m.–7 p.m. Sat, 11 a.m.–4 p.m. Sun. Queeny Park, 550 Weidman, 314-889-0433, gslaa.org.
