The Most Romantic Spot to Dine in St. Louis

The Most Romantic Spot to Dine in St. Louis

What's the most romantic spot in the city to dine? There appears to be a new contender.

The month of September signals the return of patio dining in St. Louis, and while many there are al fresco spots to coo and woo, none is more dramatic than in the company of the six ballerinas of "Still Point," local sculptor Ruth Keller Schweiss' bronze water sculpture (left) just outside the Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis.

This month the Ritz introduces "Dinner at the Fountain," a scatter of tables for two or four that can be reserved on Friday and Saturday nights, weather permitting. The elegance of the dancers in grand battement is a perfect accompaniment to Grill chef Norman Hunt's Lobster and Prawn Campanelle or filet en croute (below), with forest mushrooms, summer vegetables and a sherry gastrique. Another appropriate option is the four-course tasting menu ($59 per person, $89 paired with wine).

A candle flickers as the sun sets behind you, great food and drink, the Ritz's "it's my pleasure" service... A meal in St. Lou doesn't get much better.

One bit of advice: save room for sweets. Über-pastry chef Nathaniel Reid, a Farmington-native, Mizzou grad, and one of the "Top 10 Pastry Chefs in America" in 2012, according to the Dessert Professional Magazine, has recently returned to the midwest and planted roots at the St. Louis Ritz. His dramatic creations, such as his White Chocolate Yuzu Ice Cream and Strawberry Sorbet "Baked Alaska" (above), is not to be missed. Reid's list of accolades (new website here) is as deep and rich as his Madagascar-inspired Sambava (below).

Before you reserve a "Dinner at the Fountain," though, read up on Reid's accomplishments here and here. You might even want to consider inviting your extremely-hard-to-impress friends, you know, the McSnootys.
