The smoke signals regarding Chef Marc Curran were swirling but nothing was clear. It became known that Curran had been relieved of duties at Araka on April 13, but aside from that, and especially since the departure involved allegations of stealing and burglary, we foodie Indians stayed silent until we got a better read.
That happened last week, when the RFT's Ian Froeb reported that Curran had, in fact, been charged with six counts of felonious burglary and six counts of misdemeanor theft/stealing from the restaurant.
SLM caught up with Brad Beracha yesterday seeking subsequent news. "There’s not a whole lot more to add," said Araka's owner, “the charges speak for themselves. I understand there will be a grand jury hearing in late July." Then some gallows humor: "Doing business in this economy is bad enough…piling theft onto that doesn’t help at all.”
But there is good news. Beracha also reported that "the team is more motivated and inspired now, not having to work under someone so troubled and unhappy." Chef Eric Emaheiser “who’s been at Araka since day one, just put out a new menu last Friday...and it's good. It may sound strange, but we're operating on a higher level now."
Beracha recently added some snazzy, soft seating to Araka's already stellar front patio and the weather forecast for the week is just about perfect...no better time to show your support to one of the city's more stand-up restaurateurs. -- George Mahe
